What actually happens when it rains on your wedding day

Rain is the thing couples worry about most and plan for least. It gets checked obsessively in the fortnight before the wedding and almost never discussed in the twelve months before that, which is exactly the wrong way around.
Here is what actually happens on a wet wedding day, and the handful of decisions worth making early so that the day runs on a plan rather than on panic.
Someone has to make the call, and it should not be you
This is the single most useful thing to sort out in advance, and the one almost nobody asks about.
On a wet morning somebody has to decide whether the ceremony moves indoors. That decision usually has a deadline attached, because chairs, arbours and sound gear take time to shift. If nobody has agreed who decides and by when, the choice gets made late, by a group of anxious people, in front of arriving guests.
Ask the venue two questions before you book: who makes the weather call, and what time of day do they make it. A venue that answers instantly has done this many times. The answer you want is that their coordinator makes it, at a stated hour, after speaking to you.
What moving indoors actually looks like
The fear is that an indoor ceremony is a downgrade. In practice it is usually a different room with the same people in it, and the change is often more flattering than the original plan.
Everlast Studio's own galleries make the point better than any argument. At Western Ridge in Glamorgan Vale, the ceremony was planned outdoors with the property's panoramic views behind it, and the rain moved it inside moments before the bride walked. The indoor ceremony added a warm, intimate feel, with everyone gathered close. At Cherbon Waters in Burbank, Samantha and Cameron were rained on for much of the day, and it brought everyone closer rather than dampening anything.
That is the pattern rather than the exception. Guests move inward, the room gets smaller, and everything gets warmer and louder. Nobody remembers it as the wedding that got rained on. They remember it as the one where everyone was close together.
Wet weather plans that hold up, and ones that do not
Not all backup plans are equal, and the difference is easy to check.
A permanent, purpose-built space is the strongest answer. It exists whatever the forecast does, it costs nothing extra, and it has been used before.
A hired marquee is a decision you will have to make, usually days out, usually at your own expense, sometimes when the hire company is already booked.
A covered deck or verandah is the answer most likely to disappoint. Ask how many seated guests it actually holds, because the number is often well under the venue's full capacity, and ask what happens if the rain is blowing sideways.
Ask to see the wet weather space in person on the tour, not in a photograph. If a venue is reluctant to show it, that is the answer.
Rain is kinder to photographs than sunshine
This surprises people. A bright, cloudless afternoon is the hardest light of all to photograph in: harsh shadows across faces, squinting, and blown-out white dresses. Cloud behaves like an enormous softbox, evening out skin tones and letting photographs happen anywhere on the property rather than only in the few shaded spots.
Rain also produces images that a dry day simply cannot. Reflections on wet paths, umbrellas as colour and shape, light bouncing off glass, and the covered-doorway portraits that only exist because everyone was sheltering. Wet night photographs, in particular, are some of the most striking a studio will deliver all year.
The small things worth arranging in advance
None of these take long, and all of them are easier to organise in month three than in the final week.
Umbrellas. Buy a dozen large, matching ones, ideally clear so faces stay lit. Mismatched supermarket umbrellas are the detail people notice in photographs later.
A second pair of shoes. Grass turns to mud quickly, and heels sink. Something flat for the walk between spaces saves both the shoes and the timeline.
Towels at the door. Obvious, rarely arranged, and the thing guests remember being grateful for.
A slightly longer timeline. Everything moves more slowly in rain. Twenty minutes of slack across the day absorbs almost all of it.
A plan for elderly guests. The walk from car park to ceremony is the part that goes wrong. Ask whether the venue can drop people closer.
What to ask before you book
Four questions, asked while you still have a choice of venues, will tell you almost everything about how a wet day would run:
Where exactly does the ceremony go if it rains, and how many seated guests does that space hold?
Who makes the weather call, and at what time?
How long does the changeover take, and who does it?
Where do the group photographs happen if the lawn is out?
Choosing a venue with this in mind
In Queensland this is not a hypothetical, so it is worth weighing when comparing venues rather than after booking one. And if it does rain
The forecast is not the day. Couples who spend the fortnight before refreshing an app almost always report afterwards that the weather turned out to be the least memorable part of it.
A venue with a real plan, suppliers who have worked a wet day before, and a dozen clear umbrellas in the boot is the whole of the preparation required. Everything after that takes care of itself.

Countryside weddings at Maleny, QLD
Tiffany’s Maleny was the setting for Jenelle and Jayson’s ceremony, with its beautiful hinterland outlook and sweeping views toward the Glass House Mountains creating such a memorable place for them to say their vows. Tiffany’s has long been known as one of the Sunshine Coast’s standout wedding venues, and it is easy to understand why couples are drawn to it. The setting feels elevated and scenic, while still holding onto that calm, relaxed feeling the hinterland does so well.
The day began at Tranquil Park Maleny, where Jenelle and Jayson got ready before heading to Tiffany’s for the ceremony. Tranquil Park also hosted the reception, which gave the celebration a lovely sense of continuity from the quieter parts of the day through to the evening. The space worked beautifully for their guests, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that felt easy to settle into. It was one of those celebrations where everyone could relax and be present, and that always shapes the feel of the day in the best way.
For portraits, we moved between a couple of unique locations within the Maleny area. Each location brought something different, from wide open views to softer, more intimate moments between the two of them. The sunset portraits especially felt like such a highlight, with the rolling landscape and soft evening light framing everything so naturally. Jenelle and Jayson looked completely at ease together, and those locations gave them the perfect space to slow down and enjoy that part of the day.
The details of the day also came together so beautifully thanks to the vendor team behind it. The light is softer, the skin tones look better, and everything tends to feel a little more relaxed once the formalities are out of the way. The tricky part is making space for it without disappearing from your own reception for too long. The good news is that with a well-structured timeline, you really can have both.
The biggest thing to know is that golden hour does not happen at the same time every wedding day. It shifts depending on the season and your location, so it should be worked into your timeline intentionally rather than guessed on the day. A good rule is to allow around 45 minutes for golden hour photos. That does not mean 45 minutes of nonstop posing. It gives enough room to step away, move to the best spot, ease into it, and create portraits that feel natural without needing to rush back after ten minutes.
The best way to make this work is to build it around your reception flow. In most cases, golden hour photos fit best after the ceremony and before your reception. Although in summer, it’s a bit later in the day, so slipping outside after your reception has started can sometimes work best. For example, many couples slip out after dinner service begins, between courses, or just after speeches if the timing lines up. This way, you are not missing the most social and energetic part of the night, and your guests are still happily eating, chatting, or being entertained while you step away briefly.
It also helps to let your planner, photographer, and venue know ahead of time that golden hour photos are a priority. When everyone is on the same page, the timeline can be structured to support it properly. Your photographer can check the sunset time, suggest the best window to leave, and make sure there is a nearby location ready to go. That planning makes a big difference because it keeps the whole thing feeling seamless rather than like an interruption.
At the end of the day, golden hour photos are usually worth it, but only when they are planned with intention. After the ceremony, Crissy and Michael wandered through the hills for portraits, golden light wrapping around them as the sun began to dip behind the mountains. At their reception, they had a traditional ukraine cake along with an australian cake to celebrate the coming together of 2 cultures. They had sparkulars and a champagne tower, which was a crowd favorite. It was the perfect way to kick off the festivities, setting the tone for the rest of the celebration.

They will often arrive to the ceremony earlier so can capture your ceremony location details, guests arrive, photos with the groom and family prior to the ceremony
During the Ceremony: A 2nd photographer will focus on the more ‘candid’ moments. While your main photographer is focusing on ‘You’ your 2nd will be looking out for your family and close friends reactions and some extra creative shots.
During Family photos: Your 2nd photographer will be photographing your guests, the canapes, the scenery
During Bridal Party Photos: Your second photographer will be looking for extra creative angles, assist with equipment (Which allows your main photographer more freedom to be taking more photos), They will also focus on your bridal party. Depending on timing and locations, they may also sneak off a bit earlier to get some photos of your reception room before your guests enter.
During Reception: They focus on lots of candid moments and details (They are like a fly on the wall), for the formalities - your 2nd photographer is creating a second angle and an extra set of eyes amongst your guests.
